Big Head Todd - Broken Hearted Savior

Here's Big Head Todd singing their biggest hit, Broken Hearted Savior. The guys formed the band back in 1986 while they were attending the University of Colorado. They soon built up a big following in Denver and Boulder, Colorado. They toured extensively throughout the Mountain States and West Coast of the United States in their van dubbed "The Colonel", which clocked up over 400,000 miles. Broken Hearted Savior peaked at #9 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts back in 1993. Enjoy!

Better Than Ezra - Good

Better Than Ezra is an alternative rock band from New Orleans, LA that formed in 1987 when the band members were attending Louisiana State University. They played college parties and clubs for years before releasing their first major label album in 1995 called Deluxe. Their first single from that album called Good was and still is their biggest hit as it went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts and #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Enjoy!

Jennifer Nettles Band - What You Signed Up For

Before Jennifer Nettles became the superstar lead singer for the band Sugarland, she was playing clubs and bars all over the Atlanta area with her own band playing her version of blues mixed with country and rock. This is a rare look at one of her early performances at the Variety Playhouse here in Atlanta. Enjoy!

The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen

The Afghan Whigs were one of those bands that were always on the brink of making it big, but instead they always remained a great alternative college rock band. That's probably why their die-hard fans were and still are so loyal. Gentlemen is from their album of the same name that was released in 1993. Enjoy!

The Replacements - Bastards of Young

The Replacements are considered to be one of the greatest bands to come out of the 80's college rock scene. They were notorious for showing up for their gigs completely wasted and many times, they would play an entire show of nothing but covers songs rather than their own songs. Bastards of Young was from their first major label release called Tim. Enjoy!

Jupiter Coyote - The Real Thing

The quality of this video isn't great, but it's one of the only videos of Jupiter Coyote live. I've seen them play live more than any other band, and they always put on a great show. Back in my college days, I helped the band set up at our fraternity house. If anyone out there has any other footage of them, please forward the link to me. Thanks and enjoy this clip!

Cake - Never There

Cake is very hard to label. Some say they're a college jam band that hit the mainstream. Others label them as alternative funky rock. Still others, label them as alternative country music. Whatever you want to call them, if you've ever been a to a Cake concert, you'll understand why I label them as a college jam band. They're a blast to see live, and they thrive in smaller more intimate settings. This is their biggest hit, Never There. Enjoy!

The BoDeans are one of my all-time favorite bands. They've never achieved the commercial success they deserve, but I don't think they mind. They've always done things their way. This is one of the few official music videos they released for their song, She's A Runaway. Enjoy!

10,000 Maniacs - Hey Jack Karouac and Eat for Two Live Music Videos

10,000 Maniacs formed back in 1981 in Jamestown, New York and they originally called themselves Still Life. They even lived here in Atlanta briefly in 1982 where they raked leaves and sold their blood plasma for money. They eventually moved back to New York and in 1987, they released their album, In My Tribe, which is, in my opinion, one of the best alternative rock albums of all-time. Hey Jack Karouac is from that album, and Eat For Two is from their 1989 album, Blind Man's Zoo. Enjoy the video!

Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching

The Dave Matthews Band as they were called back in 1993 used to play the Ivory Tusk bar in Tuscaloosa, AL. The first time I saw them at the Tusk is still one of the best performances I have ever been to. They were a great college jam band to see live.

This song, Ants Marching, was the first song on their independently released album, Remember Two Things. It was later re-released in 1994 when the band hit it big with their major label release of Under the Table and Dreaming album. The first video is the official music video, and the second is a live performance of the song. Enjoy!

The Freddy Jones band was formed in 1992 by Wayne Healy and Marty Lloyd, two Loyola University dropouts. Solar Circus Jams With Bruce Springsteen

Back when I was in college at the University of Alabama, Solar Circus played many times at our fraternity house and in the bars in Tuscaloosa. They were one of my favorite bands to listen to live. Here's a great video featuring the band playing at a small bar called The Metro in Long Branch, NJ the day after Jerry Garcia's passing... Bruce had no idea a band was playing and wound up doing a set of music with Solar Circus - only 2 songs made it on tape - Brighter Things and Mustang Sally. Enjoy the video!

The Samples - Weight of the World Official Music Video

When I think of great college bands, one band comes to mind immediately for me...The Samples. I first heard The Samples when I moved to Dillon, CO to work at Keystone Resort during my junior year in college back in 1991. A couple of college friends of mine, who were already out there working, were playing The Samples' first CD the night we arrived in Colorado. I remember listening to the CD over and over again and couldn't believe how great they sounded. I was hooked. Over the next few years, I saw them live as many times as I could. They were awesome to watch live. Jeep (their original drummer) was incredible to watch during their live shows.

This video for Weight of the World is from their AutoPilot CD and is one of the few professional music videos the band ever made. With this song from The Samples, I welcome you to College Jam Bands. I'm glad you're here. Enjoy the video!
